(TOPEKA, KS, 12/12/2022) – The Kansas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Kansas) today welcomed the response of a Valley Center High School to an alleged racist incident involving several students at a basketball game against Topeka High School.
At a game on Dec. 3, several Valley Center High School students reportedly taunted players on Topeka High School’s basketball team with racial slurs and threats. They also reportedly used a Black baby doll in their taunts. In a joint statement the two schools made Friday, they said the students had been disciplined, but did not specify how due to federal law prohibiting the release of such information.

“We welcome the swift response of Valley Center High School to the reports of hateful, racist behavior by some of its students at a recent basketball game,” said CAIR-Kansas Board Chair Moussa Elbayoumy. “We urge school officials to introduce education programs on the dangers of racism to ensure similar incidents do not occur in the future.”
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
